Never ask a Parrothead such a question. In addition to the obvious, we like most classic rock...Bob Seger, Fogerty, etc. We danced at our wedding to John Denver's "My Sweet Lady." And Dad still wants the chicken dance.
I have been pondering why my father, whom I have never seen do the chicken dance, is so adamant about having the chicken dance. Is he planning on making his dancing debut? However, when we talked to the DJ we gave him a playlist that included two Creedence songs and I did mention that he is allowed to play a Buffet song at the request of my parents so figure out which one you want. We have a good deal of classic rock on the playlist other than CCR too including The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, Love, The Faces, Cat Stevens, etc, etc. So it looks like the Seniffs should be happy. No chicken dance.
Let's see now...it's kinda hard remembering back that far! Gotta agree with Seger ("Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" & "Old Time Rock & Roll" are 2 great dance tunes) & CCR (how can you stay seated for "Fortunate Son", "Looking Out My Back Door" or "Green River"?).
Other dance classics from back in The Day: 1. "All Right Now" by Free. 2. "Gimme Some Lovin" by Spencer Davis Group. 3. "Livin In The USA" & maybe "Keep On Rockin Me Baby": Steve Miller Band 4. Gotta have some Motown, 'specially if you wanna see Uncle Brad hit the floor: "Heat Wave"; "Nowhere to Run" & "Dancin in the Streets" by Martha & The Vandellas 5. More Motown: "I Can't Help Myself"; "Same Old Song"; "(Reach Out) I'll Be There" by the Four Tops. 6. Oldie but Goldie: "Green Onions" by Booker T & The MG's. 7. Maybe some Rascals stuff, i.e.: "Good Lovin".
Dang....that's some good stuff right there. Might hafta dance.

(Breathe, Kaye, Breathe.) Last month I took the liberty to create a list for just this purpose. How do i attach a 17 page document to this site? (I'm just kidding. It's only 3 pages.) Now how do i attach it?

Yes, it's true....my lack of dancing became legendary. It wasn't always that way, however. What she fails to mention is why I had to give up dancing. You see, since it was impossible to dance with ALL the girls who yearned to dance with me, I thought it best to not dance at all. Far fewer broken hearts that way. And far fewer "cat fights" at the dances. The battles over who would get to dance with me could get quite ugly. Ah, but I digress.
Oh, and a warning to you....if anyone brings up disco (shudder) as an option, just politely excuse yourself and RUN!!! As all true music lovers know, disco is an abomination!!
Finally, since there seems to be some disdain aimed at "Gimme Some Lovin", I suggest you two listen to this. You WILL dance....you won't be able to help yourselves: http://www.imeem.com/styderissouthbound/music/eDUILD1X/spencer_davis_group_spencer_davis_group_gimme_some_lovin/
Ok. New ideas from old minds: (You can try these...from another generation entirely) Frank Sinatra The way you look tonight Lena Horn Rules of the Road pretty much anything by Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong. Have I mentioned HOW MUCH STINKIN' FUN THIS IS? More to follow. MUCH MORE.
OK....I tried to warn you about her. "I'm a Believer"? Has she gone mad?!?! Or is this some evil, cunning trick....trying to get me to accede to disco as an acceptable alternative to a Monkee's song?
Hi Guys! Are you sure you want my input? Dick & I used to dance to New York New York & what about Moon River, or The Shadow of Your Smile. I got out a bunch of CDs yesterday and oh such great music!

ok. so it could use some editing. But you're safe with Motown and R&B.
"Gimmie Some Lovin" is suitable only for the Chicken Dance.
There is also a whole genre called: "Disco" that is very dance friendly.
Yes, laugh you may, but dance you must. (Yoda)
oops. I forgot Brick House by the Commadors. MY BAD.

OK. The truth. My dancing is eerily similar to the pathetic waddling of a crippled hippo.
Well put. now get behind The Chicken.

MUST: Chicago's Color my World.
Beautiful slow love song, easy to dance to.
MUST: Dire Strait's "Sultans of Swing"
MUST: Chicago's "Just You and Me"
(I think I've just nominated that to Dad's and my: "our song".)
I'm sorry. I'll shut up now. This is your wedding. You pick the songs you want. You've always had wonderful taste in music.
MUST: Our Love is Here to Stay. Ella Fitzgerald
ok. I lied. I can't shut up.
The Way You Look Tonite by Frank Sinatra.
